NEW DELHI: In a historic message to the nation, and possibly to the mankind, that honesty is still the biggest strength as Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party swept the national capital leading in 65 of 70 seats of Delhi Assembly.
In democracy, you elect a government you deserve. #AAP was expected to clinch maximum a two-third majority. However, to the surprise of all including AAP leaders, the people of Delhi have reposed faith in the newly created party.
Addressing people from the party office, Kejriwal congratulated people saying this is the victory of ‘common man’ even as he urged party MLAs and office bearers to refrain from high-handedness and humbly serve people.
Meanwhile the election symbol of AAP broom has vanished from the market in the city. While most of the exit polls find Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party is set to sweep the national capital, rival BJP leaders maintain they are confident of their victory, adding these election surveys will go wrong as was the case in 2013.
In the previous Assembly elections, almost all exit polls had waived off the newly created Aam Aadmi Party which surprised all winning 28 of the 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly. AAP came second after BJP which bagged 32 seats including one by its ally Shiromani Akali Dal. However, experts doubt if the saffron party can repeat its performance this time.
Delhi registered 67% polling on Saturday as 713 candidates remained in the fray to be elcted by 1.33 crore voters in the national capital. If AAP wins this will be the first setback to the saffron party which won all four Assembly elections held after it assumed power at Centre in May last year, thanks to the Modi wave nationwide.
Today’s results will also have significant impact on Bihar politics where assembly elections are due toward the end of this year.
