NEW DELHI: Even as Congress party workers shouted the slogan ‘Rahul for PM’, party chief Sonia Gandhi bluntly rejected their demand, saying “the decision at the CWC meet is final”.

Addressing the AICC meet, Sonia said that the Congress will battle for the party’s secular tradition of living in one composite identity.

“The disparity still exists in the society which is painfully widespread. The upcoming election is battle for India as it was perceived by the founding fathers,” the Congress president said.

The divisive forces are stretching social fabric to breaking point which is cause of concern, said Sonia and urged all political parties to rise above political interests and help pass anti-graft bills pending in the Parliament.

“Secularism is not a political compulsion but a matter of faith for Congress,” she said.

Meanwhile, Congress workers chanted “Rahul for PM” slogan during the course of the meeting. The situation was such that the party vice-president had to intervene to calm the workers.

Rahul came to podium and asked the workers to settle down and assured that he would speak his mind out post 3 pm.

Earlier, Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi pacified the party activists by saying that patience is the biggest character of any party or organisation.

Congress also passed a resolution to officially make Rahul Gandhi in-charge of its election campaign. Besides, the Congress president praised Manmohan Singh for his remarkable performance in last two terms.
