Poll suggests clear majority to NDA for first time

NEW DELHI: Bolstered by a strong wave in favour of BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi in north India, the safforn party-led NDA looks set to clinch majority in the 16th Lok Sabha.

According to a survey for the NDTV, the NDA is likely to cross the 272-mark in the House with a strength of 543. Till now, all the surveys had predicted a hung verdict despite a growth for the NDA consistently.

Five rounds of polling are yet to take place with media reports suggesting significant gain for BJP in the four phases conducted so far.

The survey suggested NDA might get 275 seats, 16 more than what the poll had found last month, in the 543-member House. BJP may get 226 seats on its own, highest by any party since 1991. The number of seats for UPA may go down to 111 as TMC is set to emerge as the third largest party with 30 seats.

A strong Modi wave in the Hindi belt is being attributed to the success of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi with Karnataka, the only major state where NDA may fail to do well.

Andhra Pradesh could be the major setback to Congress where the party may be reduced to just six from 33 in 2009. While AIADMK may win 22 seats, SP will get 14 and BJD 13. AAP could win only one seat in Delhi.
