NEW DELHI: Surprising all, 91-year-old senior Congress leader and former chief minister of both Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand N D Tiwari announced his decision to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Varanasi on behalf of the Congress party on Wednesday.
Following AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal’s announcement to take on BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi from Varanasi in the 2014 Parliament elections, all eyes were set on the temple city. Even political circle were abuzz with speculations over the fate of both Modi and Kejriwal as the two biggest rivals of the 16th Lok Sabha elections in India have decided to lock horns against each other.
While AAP leaders say Kejriwal’s decision to fight against Modi at Varanasi is not ‘symbolic’, and he is there to treat Modi with a taste of defeat for the first time, BJP leaders claim Kejriwal is there only to hog limelight and remain in news.
Now that the senior Congress leader who enjoys excellent rapport with the ruling Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav also, has thrown his hat into the race, the elections in Varanasi is certainly going to be centre of attractions of the 2014 general elections. However, many well wishers of Tiwari believe he may have to reconsider his decision keeping in mind his old age and falling health.
