RAIPUR: Defying Maoist violence in the first phase of polling on November 11, about 74% voting was registered from 18 constituencies of Bastar division and Rajnandgaon district in Chhattisgarh, taking a leap from 66.85% in 2008 Assembly elections, electoral officials said on Tuesday.
Dongargaon recorded highest voting percentage of 84.80%, Konta and Bijapur constituencies recorded lowest 40 % and 41%, respectively.
According to EC officials, the final polling percentage recorded is 74 of which maximum voter turn out was recorded from Khairagarh with 84.62%, Khujji with 84.58%, Kondagaon with 83.90% and Bastar with 82.70%.
Even as Naxalites remained in the offensive in several belts of Bastar, considerably good voter turnout was recorded.
The leap in percentage clearly indicates that the voters in large came out of their houses despite regular threats from Naxalites to boycott polls, yet there were nearly 32 polling stations which recorded zero polling.
These 32 polling stations are among the 167 booths, which were shifted to different locations due to their hyper-sensitiveness including Konta, Dantewada, and Bijapur segments.
D D Singh, joint deputy chief electoral officer said, “As of now, proposal will be sent to Election Commission of India for re-polling in two polling stations in Antagarh region, Chote Pankhajur and Sitarmaiya where polling parties couldn’t reach due to Maoists insurgency. Based on further complaints and proposals from district headquarters EC would decide about re-polling in other booths.”
He said that re-polling could take place during the second phase of Assembly elections on November 19, if the EC approves the proposal. According to electoral officials Konta recorded maximum number of zero per cent of polling in places like Penta, Kamaram, Gumodi, Singaram polling booths among others.
At least 50 polling booths of four constituencies in Bastar witnessed 0% voting in the 2008 Assembly elections.
