NEW DELHI: A day after Arvind Kejriwal’s decision to provide 50% subsidy on power tariff, two CMs announced electricity sops to poor and middle class families in Haryana and Tamil Nadu.

Haryana CM BS Hooda said his government would provide a rebate of Rs 200 on power bills every two months even as Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalitha chose 7% hike to employees of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO).

Hooda said households with 1,600 units or less consumption in two months will get the rebate besides no increase in power tariff in the fiscal year 2014-15.

The Haryana government has also decided not to charge fare to girl students from government schools for travelling in state roadways buses. The girl students will be issued passes which entail them for free travel upto 60 km.

In Tamil Nadu, the hike will benefit nearly 81,000 employees with an additional cost of Rs 252 crore to the corporation annually. The hike will be effective retrospective from December 1, 2011 and will remain in force till November 30, 2015.

Meanwhile, Tata Power, one of the three power distribution companies in Delhi, has welcomed the power subsidy. Each family with a monthly consumption of upto 400 units, will get 50% subsidy.

The announcement came two days after the Delhi government decision to provide 20000 litres of free water per household every month. The minority government fulfilled two major election promises within a week of assuming power.

An estimated 28 lakh households will benefit from the power subsidy which will be effective from Wednesday, with an additional cost of Rs.200 crore annually. But Rs 140 crore will be borne by the power companies.
