Bihar cheating: Lalu wants open-book system, Modi supports

PATNA: Following wide-spread condemnation of mass cheating in Bihar Board examinations, RJD chief and former chief minister of the state Lalu Prasad Yadav today advocated open-book system. And he got support from none other than his bete noire Sushil Modi, former deputy CM and senior BJP leader of the state.

Lalu says even if text books are provided, an examinee can not write answers if he has not studied properly and will keep tracing the answer till the examination is over.

“Had it been my government we would have given books to examinees to write … only those who have read could write answers from books and for those who have not exam duration of three hours would end and they would still be searching for answers,” said Prasad.

Surprisingly, senior BJP leader and face of the state unit for long Sushil Kumar Modi endorsed Lalu’s suggestion saying the open-book system is prevalent in prominent universities in America and other parts of the world.

“Open-book system in examination is prevalent in prominent universities in America and elsewhere in the world. It has the logic that only student who has read the book could trace the answer,” Sushil Modi told reporters.

He, however, said its (use of book in exam) is a separate issue and could not be linked with rampant cheating in ongoing matriculation exam which drew wrath of the Patna High Court too.

But Modi’s party colleague and state BJP chief Binod Narayan Jha said it was enough to prove “Lalu Prasad has not changed. Jungle raj is in his DNA” even as he chose to keep silent on Modi.

Is open-book system the best answer to mass cheating in exams?
