NEW DELHI: Much to the respite of the BJP, the Centre got time till October 10 from the Supreme Court on Tuesday to take the final call on formation of an elected government in Delhi even as the government informed the apex court that they are waiting for response from the President on LG’s letter to him.

BJP counsel assured the court that the party would consider formation of a government with utmost seriousness if and when they are invited to form the government.

Delhi has been running without an elected government for almost seven months now. As per Constitution, the LG must explore all opportunities to form a government, and recommend dissolution of assembly only after he is convinced that there is no chance of such a possibility.

The LG has tried his best. The single largest party with 32 MLAs BJP refused to form government first. AAP, the second largest party with 28 MLAs, was tricked into power and quit after 49 days.

No party is in a position to get majority without horse trading. A powerful section of Delhi BJP including Vijendra Gupta, Dr Harsh Vardhan and Vijay Goel is understood to not favour a scenario that allows for potential horse trading, and prefer elections.

More so, after AAP released a video on Monday which allegedly showed one of its MLAs being offered money by a BJP leader to resign from the post.

So what does hold back Modi government to recommend dissolution of the Delhi assembly, now in suspended animation, and call an election? In fact, this could be a fantastic opportunity for BJP to redeem its image and turn the table on AAP and Congress.

Is it the making of a scenario where the LG invites BJP to form a government, President gives his assent but Modi says ‘no’ on high moral ground?
