NEW DELHI: Lt Gen (retd) Nirbhay Sharma has become the eighth Governor of Mizoram within a year. Sharma, originally appointed as Governor of Arunachal Pradesh in May 2013, was transferred to Mizoram on Tuesday.

If everything goes well, he will serve the state till 2018 when his term expires. Mizoram had earlier seen exit of two Governors Kamla Beniwal and Aziz Qureshi, both appointed during UPA-II.

Beniwal had locked horn with Modi on a number of occasions while serving as Governor of Gujarat when Modi was the CM. Qureshi had dragged the NDA government to court after he was sacked on March 28.

First V Purushothaman resigned as Governor of Mizoram in 2014 after he was transferred to Nagaland without being consulted. Former Governor of Maharashtra K Sankaranarayanan was the next who refused to take charge after he was transferred to small hilly state.

Sankaranarayanan was followed by former bureaucrat V K Duggal and K K Paul was given the additional charge of Mizoram along with Meghalaya. Paul is the former Delhi Police Commissioner and was later transferred to Uttarakhand.

West Bengal Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi has been holding additional charge of Mizoram since Paul’s departure.

Has Mizoram become the dumping ground for Governors who were appointed by the UPA government?
