KOLKATA: A state with a woman chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, is no better to women. A girl was gang raped twice by the same group in the city in October. When she complained to police her life became worse.
A daughter of a taxi driver, who is also a member of CITU, the trade union wing of CPM, was raped twice by the same group in October.
Following her complaint to police, the accused and their friends made her life so miserable that she could not even step out of home. The family had no option but to move to a place 20 km away.
But that did not end her ordeal. Her torment continued until she set herself on fire on December 23 when no one else was at home.
A number of protests were held in the city on Tuesday following the death. Her father wanted to take her body to CITU office in a procession to which police obstructed.
However, TV reports now suggest the city police has changed its mind and allowed the procession even as her father insisted only he can decide when to cremate his daughter.
The girl’s family alleges policemen tried to cremate the body but could not as they did not have the death certificate. But a senior police officer said the girl’s body was taken to the crematorium only after the family’s consent.
The distraught parents have demanded death sentence for the rapists and for those who tormented her so much that she killed herself.
