MUMBAI: The Bollywood star broke down in the courtroom as the judge in a sessions court announced five-year jail term for super star Salman Khan in Mumbai on Wednesday. His ordeal ended within three hours as he managed to get an interim bail of two days from the Bombay High Court.
The actor was convicted of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, with all charges proved against him. The court also held him guilty for driving under the influence of alcohol as well as without a driving license.
Salman his Toyota Land Cruiser over five persons, sleeping on a pavement near his home, early on September 28, 2002, killing one and injuring four when he was returning from a party.
Even though the prosecution sought the maximum punishment of 10 years in prison, the court decided to award a sentence of five years.
After the conviction, his lawyer began arguments on quantum of punishment in the case. A tight security blanket was thrown around the court, where Salman’s family including brothers Arbaaz, Sohail and sister Arpita Khan had arrived early this morning ahead of the verdict.
As the actor was surrounded by his family and friends, those three hours unmasked a number of Bollywood celebrities who held mankind to shame while expressing love and support to Salman Khan.
