MORADABAD: Samajwadi Party chief and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav surprised all on Thursday as he demanded leniency to rapists saying young boys make mistakes sometimes and should be treated with less severity.
Addressing an election rally in Muradabad of Uttar Pradesh, Mulyam criticised awarding death sentence to the three rapists in the Shakti Mill gang rape case in Mumbai recently.
The guilty had committed a number of rapes after taking hostage of girls in a deserted area of the factory that has been shut down for long.
The SP chief said boys do make mistakes, and should not be hanged, adding if his party comes to power, the rape law will be amended and whosoever files a false case with rape charges will also be brought to book.
Azam Khan’s disputed statement over Kargil war:
Mulayam, a former wrestler, also endorsed the disputed statement of Azam Khan, a minister in the Uttar Pradesh cabinet and Muslim face of the Samajwadi Party.
Khan had said in a rally recently that India could win the Kargil war against Pakistan because of the sacrifices of Muslims soldiers. Khan was criticised by almost all political parties for the statement as Mulayam said whatever he had said was correct.
