India got independence from Britishers on August 15, 1947. The Constitution was passed in the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949 but took effect on January 26, 1950. A new era began with a democratic system of governance in place. Since then we have been celebrating the Republic Day on January 26 every year.
The Republic Day is one among the national holidays. A grand parade is held in the Capital. The President, Prime Minister grace the occasion with the chief guest of the function that takes place at Rajpath near the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
The President unfurls the Tricolour before addressing the nation. This is followed by a grand parade. Apart from many contingents a number of colourful tableau also participate, depicting India’s rich culture and tradition.
The parade displays India’s strength which lies in the unity among diversity. The nation remembers the martyrs and the heroes who sacrificed lives for the sake of the nation. The President distributes awards to people with exemplary courage and exceptional talent before a mind-boggling show of courage by the Indian Air Force personnel
The celebrations continue for three days before it culminates at the Beating Retreat ceremony on January 29 every year.
