NEW DELHI: In his third and probably the final press meet as PM, Manmohan Singh announced his retirement after the end of his present term.
Singh said Rahul Gandhi, vice-president of Congress, has outstanding credentials to become a prime minister, and his name will be announced at the right time.
The PM launched a scathing attack on BJP and its PM candidate Narendra Modi saying if he becomes the PM, it will be disastrous for India.
Singh raked up the 2002 riots too. Responding to questions on he being dubbed as a weak prime minister, Singh said, “presiding over a mass massacre of innocents on the streets of Ahmedabad is not a sign of strength.”
He was critical of the contemporary media and opposition leaders for criticising him to the extent he does not deserve. Singh said his government would be remembered for its contribution to the country’s economy when history would be written.
Singh is confident that UPA will win the upcoming general election but ruled himself out as the PM for the third consecutive term.
